AMC BEST LETTER

Luke West • An enigma wrapped in a riddle Allan Moffat may have been, but beyond the most stressful of trackside racing situations back in his heyday lay a ‘people person’ trying to get out.

Allan Moffat a man apart • Allan Moffat was a giant of Australian motorsport. He was the original Ford superstar driver, and his on-track battles through the 1970s against the Holden drivers, and especially Peter Brock, helped ignite the Holden vs Ford rivalry that still sustains Supercars racing today, some half a century later. David Greenhalgh reflects on one of the most remarkable and consequential figures in Australian motorsport history.

The Real Thing • Allan Moffat’s sponsorship from Coca-Cola of his mighty Mustang was Australia’s first big non-automotive deal. This is how it came about, as described in an edited extract from David Hassall’s incredible book, The Boss: The Inside Story of Allan Moffat and his Trans-Am Mustang

The Phantom • There never was an XW/XY Hardtop. But if Ford Australia had chosen to take on Holden’s Monaro and produce a pillarless coupe of its own, it probably would have been something very much like this one-of-none Phantom XY Falcon GT Hardtop.

Group A OK • It’s 40 years since the international Group A category took hold downunder. Whether that’s a good, bad or indifferent thing is open to debate. Former AMC editor Luke West mounts the case for Group A’s early years to be more fondly remembered.

The Jaguar Ball • In 1985 three TWR Jaguar XJS Group A cars were flown to Australia to contest the James Hardie 1000. It was a lavish and expensive exercise but it paid off, with local hero John Goss and co-driver Armin Hahne steering their TWR Jaguar to victory. But there was a fourth Jaguar airfreighted from the UK to Australia as part of the Bathurst campaign. It was a new XJS cabriolet road car, not a Group A race car, but it was an integral part of the campaign – it was the centre piece in Jaguar Rover Australia’s novel method of funding the Bathurst attack. However, as JRA’s then PR man and former motoring journalist, John Crawford, explains, the seemingly simple task of getting the car landed in Sydney in time for it to perform its important pre-race role ended up becoming a major headache.

The Gentleman Part 2 • After a decade with Ford around the globe, Howard Marsden was ready for a new challenge. He found it with Japanese company Nissan, both in Australia and Europe, before rejoining the Blue Oval. And he was on the cusp of returning it to Bathurst glory when cancer claimed him at just 61. In Part 2 of his remarkable story, David Hassall reveals a man of mystery
