Captain Robert Scott's final journey to the South Pole has been called one of history's greatest tales of adventure. And his journals are among the most dramatic and moving documents in the English language. Sensitively read by David Horovitch, this new audio adaptation starts in 1910 as Scott's ship, the Terra Nova, sets sail from New Zealand. Then in vivid, conversational style details the dangerous journey through the ice to Antarctica, the winter hibernation in twenty-four hour darkness, and the final journey to and from the Pole. A remarkable story of courage, it ends with Scott's last tragic diary entry on the 29th March 1912, when he, Wilson and Bowers, out of food, sheltering from the raging blizzard outside their tent, calmly await their deaths.

This is the sanitized version of Scott's journals regarding his last expedition to the South Pole (1910-12). He hoped to reach the South Pole first for Britain but was beaten out by Norway's Roald Amundsen. Many of his accounts relate to tragic events with the ponies and the sled dogs. While Scott tries to put a genteel face on these incidents, they are, nonetheless, hard to swallow for the slightly squeamish. That this is, indeed, Scott's literal last expedition makes this even more poignant. VERDICT Scott was an incredibly coherent writer, and his thoughts, feelings, and observations are very sensitively portrayed by narrator David Horovitch, who brings great emotional depth to this tragic episode. Recommended for anyone interested in arctic exploration, expeditions, or travel journals.--Gloria Maxwell, Metropolitan Community Coll.-Penn Valley Lib., Kansas City, MO
