SHADES OF BLU • Debuting early in Star Trek: Discovery’s third season – and returning for the show’s fourth – not only has Blu del Barrio had to deal with this being their first screen role straight out of drama school, but they’ve also been making history as the first nonbinary actor to appear in Star Trek. Both factors might have been overwhelming, had it not been for the support of their fellow cast, the show’s fans, and that del Barrio’s character, Adira, has proved to be so multifaceted, not least in their complex relationship with Ian Alexander’s Gray.

THE TRILL OF IT ALL • They may lack a physical body, but Gray nevertheless made a big impact on Star Trek: Discovery Season 3. As portrayed by Ian Alexander, the Trill brought an emotional heft to theirs and Adira’s relationship arc, while in tandem with Blu del Barrio, Alexander further bolstered Star Trek’s progressive, inclusive approach to casting and storytelling. And lacking a corporeal form – for now, anyway – certainly isn’t stopping Gray from returning for Season 4.

A SENSE OF SELF

GENE RODDENBERRY • THE BASICS OF STAR TREK

Who Belongs in a Star Trek Hall of Fame? • Each issue in The Q Continuum, we’ll be putting a big question to the big stars: actors and producers, writers and directors, from every incarnation of Star Trek. To begin, and to mark the centenary of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s birth, we asked the franchise’s leading figures – among them the late René Auberjonois and Leonard Nimoy, interviewed before their passing – who should be in a Star Trek hall of fame; and more specifically, who doesn’t get enough credit for their contribution to the franchise?

The Paradise Syndrome

The Write Stuff ROBERT J. SAWYER • For more than half a century, Star Trek has been inspiring fans to embark on their own continuing missions of creativity, whether it be as artists, academics, writers, or rock stars. Talented Trekkers talks to prominent figures whose lives have been energized by the final frontier.

TOP 10 KIRK MOMENTS • A BOLD EXPLORER WHO TOOK US TO THE FINAL FRONTIER – AND BEYOND! – JAMES T. KIRK’S EXPLOITS OVER THE COURSE OF THREE SEASONS AND SEVEN FEATURE FILMS IS THE STUFF OF LEGEND AS WE HAVE WATCHED HIM BEAT THE ODDS, CHEAT DEATH, AND CHARM LADIES AND FANS ALIKE FOR OVER 50 YEARS. REDUCING ALL OF HIS GREATEST MOMENTS TO 10 IS A DAUNTING TASK, BUT AS THE GREAT MAN ONCE SAID, “MAY FORTUNE FAVOR THE FOOLISH…”

Making a Difference: A PROFILE OF JAMES T. KIRK • James T. Kirk is renowned as a legendary warrior and explorer, a steadfast Captain, a devoted friend, a serial violator of temporal rules and the Prime Directive, and a “chick magnet.” These qualities are on display from the start. “Where No Man Has Gone Before” shows us the fearless explorer at the edge of the galaxy; the man who does his utmost to save Mitchell, his friend of 15 years; the Captain who will sacrifice the friend to save his crew, and fight if he has to.
