Jacinta McIver is a free woman of color in 1860s Charleston. Her grandfather, a slave, won the favor of his master and was richly rewarded. Now Jacinta moves in circles that other blacks can only dream of. However, revolution is brewing in Charleston. Denmark Vesey is trying to incite a slave rebellion, and Jacinta is throwing herself right into the thick of it. Her father is at his wits' end, trying to figure out how to insulate her from the growing conflagration, when the perfect solution walks in the door: Solomon Dikembe. Solomon, a mulatto, lives in the North, where he has become a wealthy businessman. When Jacinta turns Solomon's head, Jason thinks his troubles are over. Unfortunately Jacinta has prejudices of her own and cannot get past the fact that Solomon is half white. Now Solomon must figure out a way to overcome her resistance and get her out of danger before it's too late.
