It starts with a mysterious phone call, summoning homicide counselor Tally Whyte back to the hometown she thought she'd left far behind her. Almost as soon as she arrives, Tally hears that a young woman she knew as a child has been found ritualistically murdered and mutilated. The deeper Tally probes into the bizarre murder, the more chilling it becomes. Each glimpse into the killer's dark mind only unnerves Tally more. Despite frustrating secrets and silences, Tally suspects she's getting close to the truth, but perhaps she's getting too close for her own good. As each new body is found, Tally has to wonder…will she be next?

Psychologist and homicide counselor Tally Whyte is portrayed with an engaging, friendly voice as she works with the friends and families of murder victims in Boston. All that changes when she returns to her hometown in Maine after she learns that her best friend's sister has been murdered. Stephanie Brush gives full attention to vocal nuance and tone as she describes the ritualistic murder scene where the mutilated body was found. She continues with a polished performance as Tally follows the clues that lead back to her father, her childhood, and the mysterious happenings that drove the two of them from the town years before. As the murders mount, Brush captures the building tension with impeccable timing. G.D.W. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine

Homicide counselor Tally Whyte, last seen in Steifel's Body Parts, travels from Boston to her hometown of Winsworth, Maine, to clear her father's name and to stop some bad things from happening in this disappointing mystery. Soon after arriving in Winsworth, Tally encounters a crazyseeming man on the road who tells her he has witnessed a murder. The next day, when she learns that the victim was the sister of a childhood friend, Tally decides to solve the crime to help her friend. As Tally weasels her way into every crevice of Winsworth life, using homicide counseling to open doors, she's sure to baffle readers with her non sequiturs and her apparent immunity to fear. "Just peachy," she assures the sheriff in her typical brusque style after dodging a bullet. A dizzying array of local figures, strange discoveries, red herrings and bona fide clues muddle more than entertain, but it's Tally's illdefined identity as detective, counselor and prodigal daughter that hopelessly tangles the threads of this poorly constructed tale.
