The Epic Story of the First Men on the Moon

On May 20, 1969, the thirty-story-high Apollo 11-Saturn V spaceship was trundled from Cape Kennedy’s Vehicle Assembly Building to Pad 39A for its final inspection and countdown. The nearly 1 million spectators who began gathering at Cape Kennedy for launch on July 16, 1969, were kept at least 3.5 miles away from the pad because, in an explosion, hundred-pound chunks of shrapnel would be hurled in a 3-mile radius. Finally, at 9:32 a.m., Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Mike Collins lifted into the skies on the greatest adventure in modern history: the first trip to the Moon.

Restoring the drama, majesty, and sheer improbability of an American triumph that has now come to be taken for granted, Rocket Men is the complete, definitive, and thrilling account of that glorious achievement. Through interviews, 23,000 pages of NASA oral histories, and declassified CIA documents on the space race, Craig Nelson offers a grippingly vivid and detailed narrative of the Apollo 11 mission.

Author Craig Nelson focuses on the rocket builders and the men who rode their inventions to the moon as he tells the story of the U.S. Space Program. Richard McGonagle sounds like he was there. His clear, slightly gruff voice sounds full of belief and pride in the program while hitting the information home. He's bemused as he talks about the celebrity status of the astronauts at the height of the space race and solemn as he tells of the risks and casualties. Nelson's account concentrates on the glory years, but takes listeners to the present and future as well. The anecdotes, brought alive through McGonagle's narration, make this an entertaining and emotional history. J.A.S. (c) AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon. In this extensively researched account of that epic achievement, former publishing executive and prize-winning author Nelson (The First Heroes
) moves seamlessly between Apollo 11
astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins, their nervous families and the equally nervous NASA ground crew. Nelson follows Armstrong in nail-biting detail as he tries to find a place to land with less than a minute’s worth of fuel remaining. A large central section of the book digresses to provide some backstory on the feverish American-Soviet game of one-upmanship in the year leading up to the Apollo 11
launch. For instance, Nelson describes Apollo 8
as an almost reckless gamble by NASA to beat the Russians in sending men to orbit the moon The book also describes the sad personal toll the mission took. Collins was best able to deal with the cost of fame yet expressed the anticlimax of life after Apollo 11
: “I seem gripped by earthly ennui.” Space fans and readers who remember that momentous time will find this an exciting read.

In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, historian Nelson offers a compelling account of the Apollo 11 mission, creating such an authentic retelling that listeners will find themselves sweating the outcome right until the very moment that Neil Armstrong sets foot on the lunar surface. Richard McGonagle delivers a rich and layered performance as he navigates through the mix of interviews, anecdotes and declassified documents and renders the central figures as endearing and heroic as they were in their heyday. A fascinating and compulsive listening experience. A Viking hardcover (Reviews, Apr. 20).
