New Jersey state police officer Doug Brock has been after infamous criminal Nicholas Bennett for years. When Bennett kills someone close to Doug, however, Doug's investigation—and his life—start spiraling out of control. He's placed on indefinite suspension from the police force and breaks things off with his fiancé, but he can't let the case go, and he continues an off-the-books investigation on his own. When Doug's former partner on the force, Nate Alvarez, receives a call from Doug saying he's discovered something big, something terrifying, something they need to call in the FBI to handle, Nate is furious that Doug has still been working the case.
But when the call ends abruptly, and shortly afterward Doug is found in a hotel room, shot and in critical condition, Nate's anger turns to fear. When Doug finally awakens from his coma, however, he has no memory of the case, or even the last several years of his life. But the pull of what he might have discovered is too strong, and he finds himself immersed in a desperate search for truth once again, regardless of the danger.
Once again Rosenfelt has written a propulsive and compelling thriller that will rivet readers from the first page to the last.

This gripping standalone from Rosenfelt (Without Warning) tells a crackerjack story replete with wry observations and witty, and totally convincing, dialogue. While hot on the trail of crime boss Nicholas Bennett, New Jersey state police officer Doug Brock somehow ended up shot and on the wrong side of a balcony—several feet below it, with serious head trauma. When he comes out of his coma, Doug recalls nothing from the last 10 years: not even his ex-fiancée, fellow cop Jessie Allen, or why, just before his shooting, he called his partner, Nate Alvarez, to say, “This time I got him.” As Doug retraces his steps before the call (aided by a photo on his phone and its amazing GPS technology, which is new to him), it becomes clear that he was dangerously close to uncovering not just criminal activity but an imminent terrorist plot. Time is running out, but Doug can’t rely on any “ta da!” recollections. The pressure to halt a catastrophic event while he struggles to recreate his former life makes this an irresistible read. Agent: Robin Rue, Writers House.

The Edgar and Shamus Award nominee of six stand-alones and 12 dog-eared Andy Carpenter novels, Rosenfelt returns with the story of New Jersey state policeman Doug Brock, shot in the head while investigating clues that one Richard Ferdowsi, an American living in Pakistan, is plotting something horrible with a terrorist organization. He awakens in the hospital with no memory of the last three months, and doctors say that getting back on the case is the only way he'll bring them back.

In his latest stand-alone thriller, Rosenfelt introduces New Jersey state police officer Doug Brock, who is suffering retrograde amnesia and can't remember the last 10 years. That means he can't remember who shot him or how close he was to foiling an imminent terrorist plot. With the help of his best friend and ex-girlfriend, Brock retraces the steps of his most recent investigation. Short chapters and shifting points of view keep the beat the clock pace moving. Brock is a solid detective who doesn't let his ignorance of iPhones or his own address slow him down. A good bet for fans of both fast-paced procedurals and intelligence-agency intrigue.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
