Living in the city of Theopolis, Kate, a young and disillusioned priestess in the Temple of Mirsha, watches the other women of the cloister dishonor their vows while receiving warnings in her dreams that the gods are coming. Meanwhile, she is haunted by shadows that listen in while she is awake.

One morning, however, Kate is visited by Mirsha herself. The goddess charges her with a quest to bring about change in the world. To do this, Kate must recover the lost Tablets of Markinet, ancient relics currently held by an evil force. No one has seen the relics for centuries, but the only promise Kate receives is that the world will change. Now the young priestess must recruit a group of adventurous misfits to help her on her goddess-given task. If they can overcome the prejudices of the past and succeed, the cost may be high, but the harsh molds of the ancient system that keeps them bound may finally break and allow new light to come into the world.

In this fantasy novel, a priestess receives a mission from a goddess and gathers a group of adventurers to help her change the world.

Pigg's highly entertaining, thematically profound adventure-fantasy chronicles a young priestess' quest to retrieve stolen artifacts. Katelarin, devoted priestess of the goddess Mirsha, has spent five long, uneventful years in Theopolis, the City of Templesuntil a visitation from the goddess changes everything. Mirsha informs her that she must recover the lost Tablets of Markinet, holy relics allegedly stolen by evil mages who now live in the Black Tower. The priestess enlists a female warrior, disgraced knight, untrustworthy thief, and others to aid her in finding the mythical tower. When they finally reach their destination, after a journey fraught with peril, revelations force Kate to reevaluate her place in the world yet again. Tonally, this debut compares to classic sword-and-sorcery sagas like that of Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melnibone, but it's the endearing female lead character and deep exploration of gender roles that make this so memorable. Despite the history of oppression from patriarchal rule and religious-based sexism, Kate uses her intelligence and courage to pursue her heroic goals. This is an epic quest, powerful coming-of-age tale, and significant social commentaryall wrapped in a rip-roaring adventure.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
