Rocko and Spanky Socko (twin sock monkeys, naturally) really know how to party. And it's a good thing, as they are invited to "a party at Shelly's House" in this kicky debut picture book by a sister-sister team. Upon receiving an invitation that promises "Friends! Presents! Cake! Fun!," Rocko and Spanky set off to find the perfect present for their pal. Much debate ensues at the Gift-o-Rama before the perky pair select a pair of brown, red-heeled socks. But when they arrive at Shelly's house, present in tow, the cheeky chimps find that the surprise is on them. Kara LaReau gives real oomph to her tale by employing plenty of snappy repartee: " 'What about these boots?' asks Spanky. 'Can I pull off the western look?' 'Please do
,' says Rocko." As complement, Jenna LaReau's artwork harmoniously contains an impressive array of media, from photographs and computer illustration to acrylics and collage. Her characters—old toys seemingly come to life—as well as a predominantly red-green-yellow palette give the book a pleasantly retro look. A cheery note about gift giving and instructions on creating snazzy gift wrap from household items is included on the final spread. After this fashionable and sweet-natured romp, young readers will surely want to join Rocko and Spanky for more adventures. Ages 3-7.

PreS-Gr 1 -Two sock monkeys believe that they are invited to a friend's party, but it turns out that it's a surprise birthday party for them. The story has little action, and the illustrations are bland and dully colored. The drawings of the monkeys lack any sense of animation and do not portray the mischievous and fun-loving nature that the author was attempting to show. Stick with Eileen Christelow's "Five Little Monkeys" books (Clarion) or H. A. Rey's classic "Curious George" titles (Houghton).-Sheilah Kosco, Rapides Parish Library, Alexandria, LA

After sock-monkey twins Rocko and Spanky are invited to a party, they put so much energy into searching for the perfect gift and outfit that they're surprised to find that the party is in honor of their birthday, about which they forgot. The amusing text and the illustrations feature winking asides to adult readers, but the wisecracks aren't at the expense of the story.
